Edward A. Wheelock served in the army on a B-24 bomber during World War II. By occupation, he was an engineer. Her married his first wife, Josephine, with whom he had four children. The marriage ultimately did not survive. He later married Sharon, with whom he spent his elder years. He died on his 93rd birthday. He was predeceased by his sister Vera and her husband Stanley; he was survived by his four children, Bonnie, Christine, Robert, and David,¹

Lloyd was the twin of Floyd Wheelock. In the 1910 census he was listed as Lloyd Wheelock, age 8, born in Michigan, son of Thomas and Dora Carrel. Sometime after the 1910 census was taken, he adopted his step-father's surname, Carrel, which he used for the rest of his life.

He was a decorator by occupation.

His wife, Goldie, was institutionalized sometime before 1940, when she was living in the Kalamazoo State Hospital.

In 1940 he was living with his mother, Dora Carrel, 66, and her second husband, head of household Thomas E. Carrel, 65, in Grand Rapids. His (half) brother, Orington, 25 was also in the household, along with John Carrel, 9, born Michigan, listed as "grandson".

In 1950 Lloyd Carrel, 49, son, was listed as "son" of the head of household, his step-father Thomas Carrel, 73, in Grand Rapids. Johnny Carrel is also in the household, 19, listed as grandson (of Thomas). Also in the household was Esther DeHaan, 38, listed as daughter (of Thomas Carrel), with her husband Hiram (or Harm) DeHaan, 55, and their children: Caroline, 13, Frederick, 12, and Thomas, 5.

His 15 Nov 1982 obit in the Grand Rapids Press identified the following survivors: his wife, Ann; four daughters and one son: Mrs. Harry (Rosie) Bloem of East Grand Rapids, John W. (Geraldine) Carrel of Wyoming, Kent County, Michigan, Mrs Donna Perlrie of Lamham, Maryland, Mrs. Shirley Elder of Wyoming, Michigan, and Mrs. Betty Goudzward of Gillett, Wyoming; a brother, Orrington Carrel; and a sister, Mrs. Harm (Esther Martha) DeHaan, both of Grand Rapids.¹

Research Notes for Lloyd Carrel:

In 1930 Lloyd Carles was 28, living in the household of Winfield S. and Rosetta Thomas, in Wyoming, Kent County, Michigan. He was listed as the son-in-law of Winfield, who was head of household. Living with Lloyd was Goldie Carles, 30, daughter (presumably of Winfield and/or Rosetta), and Rosetta Carles, 2 1/12, granddaughter.

Per marriage record, Goldie's parents were Colonel D. Wilson and Rosetta Thomas, which raises the question: who is Winfield S. Thomas? And was Thomas the maiden name of Goldie's mother? Or a married name? This requires more research on Colonel Wilson, Winfield S. and Rosetta Thomas.

In 1910, Goldie, 8, born Michigan, was living in Kansas Ward 2, Jackson County, Missouri, in the household of Colonel D. Wilson, 39, born New York, and Rosetta Wilson, wife, married for nine years (about 1901), 30, born Michigan. In 1925, Goldie Wilson, 23, born Michigan, was living in Kansas City, Kansas, in the household of Rosetta Wilson, 43, head of household.

Rosetta McNeil first married George M. Burgess, 1898, Grand Traverse, Michigan.² She was 35 on 2 May 1916 when Rosetta Burgess married Colonel D Wilson in Jackson, Missouri.³ On 11 Aug 1925, Rosetta Wilson, daughter of Lyman McNeil and and Adelia Stockton, married W. Scott Thomas in Allegan, Michigan.⁴

The maiden name of Goldie's mother was McNeil, not Thomas as stated in her married record.

Some genealogies show John Carrel as a child of Lloyd and Goldie. A John Carrel does appear in the 1940 census, living with Lloyd. John is listed as the grandson of the head of household, Lloyd's step-father, Thomas Carrel. But it is unclear whether John is the son of Lloyd, Orrington, or perhaps another half-brother of Lloyd.

A marriage record and an obit resolve the mystery.

The 2 Mar 1956 edition of The Grand Rapids Press announced that Jown W. Carrel, 25 and Geraldine L. Walton, 22, obtained a marriage license.⁵ They were married by 1958, when they announced the birth of a baby boy in The Petoskey News-Review.⁶

John W. Carrel's obit identifies his sister, Rosie Bloem, and her husband Harry Bloem, proving that John was the son of Lloyd and Goldie.
